Tiziano Faravelli Jürgen Warnatz Gold Medal 2024

Representative of the Gold Medal Selection Committee Assaad Masri (Left) and Former CI President Philippe Dagaut (Right), present the 2024 Jürgen Warnatz Gold Medal to Tiziano Faravelli (Middle) during the 40th International Symposium – Emphasizing Energy Transition.

In this fourth installment of a series of articles, The Combustion Institute recognizes combustion scientists who were honored with medals and awards during the 40th International Symposium – Emphasizing Energy Transition. Tiziano Faravelli (Politecnico di Milano, Italy) is the 2024 recipient of the Jürgen Warnatz Gold Medal, “for excellent contributions to combustion science and applications by systematic, innovative and impactful development, validation and optimization of chemical reaction mechanisms.”

Prof. Tiziano Faravelli is a full professor of chemical engineering at Politecnico di Milano. His expertise lies in transport phenomena and chemical reaction engineering of complex systems. Specifically, he focuses on developing, validating, and optimizing chemical reaction mechanisms for processes such as pyrolysis, partial oxidation, and combustion modeling of gas, liquid, and solid fuels—both fossil and renewable. Additionally, he actively investigates heterogeneous combustion of liquids (droplets) and solids, employing detailed modeling at the particle size level. Tiziano Faravelli has been a fellow of The Combustion Institute since 2019 and a Mercator fellow at Darmstadt University since 2021. He has served as an Associate Editor for the journal Combustion and Flame since 2016 and was a member of the Editorial Board of the Proceedings of The Combustion Institute from 2008 to 2019. He has also delivered several invited lectures and presentations.

Please join The Combustion Institute in congratulating Prof. Faravelli and the other award winners honored at the 40th International Symposium. Questions regarding awards may be directed to: office@combustioninstitute.org.
