A. Carlos Fernandez-Pello Alfred C. Egerton Gold Medal 2024

Representative of the Gold Medal Selection Committee Assaad Masri (Left) and Former CI President Philippe Dagaut (Right), present the 2024 Alfred C. Egerton Gold Medal to A. Carlos Fernandez-Pello (Middle) during the 40th International Symposium – Emphasizing Energy Transition.

In this second installment of a series of articles recognizing the combustion scientists who were honored with medals and awards during the 40th International Symposium – Emphasizing Energy Transition, we will be highlighting A. Carlos Fernandez-Pello (University of California [UC] Berkeley, United States), the 2024 recipient of the Alfred C. Egerton Gold Medal. Prof. Fernandez-Pello was selected to receive this award for his “exceptional contributions to combustion and fire science through transformative experimental and profound theoretical research on material flammability, microgravity and micro-combustion.” The Alfred C. Egerton Gold Medal recognizes distinguished, continuing, and encouraging contributions to the field of combustion.

Prof. A. Carlos Fernandez-Pello is a Distinguished Professor of the Graduate School at the University of California, Berkeley. He received a Doctorate of Aeronautical Engineering from Madrid University, Spain, and a Ph.D. in Engineering Sciences from the University of California, San Diego. He was a Postdoc at Harvard University and Research Staff at Princeton University before joining the UC Berkeley Mechanical Engineering Department in 1980. He would go on to be the Maynard Chair Professor and Associate Dean of the Graduate Division at UC Berkeley. Prof. Fernandez-Pello is a member of the Royal Academy of Engineering of Spain, as well as a Fellow of The Combustion Institute and ASME. He received an Honorary Doctorate in Engineering from San Marcos University in Peru. Throughout his career he studied the flammability, both smolder and flaming, of combustible solids in Earth and spacecraft environments, as well as wildland fire ignition and initial propagation, small-scale combustion, and more. He has co-authored a book on combustion, as well as over 280 peer-reviewed publications.

Please join The Combustion Institute in congratulating Prof. Fernandez-Pello and the other award winners honored at the 40th International Symposium. Questions regarding awards may be directed to: office@combustioninstitute.org.
